Higher education and economic development in the OECD: policy lessons for other countries and regions

2016

ABSTRACTThis paper sheds light on the role of tertiary or higher education in economic development across two successful OECD case studies: Finland and South Korea. A number of key aspects are discussed, from the nature of the social contract between higher education and the economy to the endogenous characteristics of domestic higher education to the links between the sector and regional development, innovation and the labour market. The lessons learned are of importance to policy makers and institutional planners across the world, not least to less developing nations and regions, due to the unprecedented opportunities brought by a global, knowledge-based economy.

Social disorder, social integration, and subjective well-being among Latin-American immigrants in Spain

2012

Social integration has consistently shown its positive effects on both physical and psychological well-being. The study of the influence of residential characteristics on both social integration and well-being, however, has been traditionally neglected. The present study analyzes the joint influence of both social disorder and social integration on the subjective well-being of 260 Latin-American immigrants living in the Valencian Community (Spain). Results show that levels of social disorder negatively influence both social integration and subjective well-being. These findings might orientate public policies that seek to improve the well-being of especially disadvantaged groups at risk of s…

Sociology of Education and Construction of Educational Policies : From the Theory to the Practice

2020

Investing in Sports Facilities: The Italian Situation Toward an Olympic Perspective. Confidence Intervals for the Financial Analysis of Pools

2015

Given the current economic crisis, there is a lack of investments also for public sport facilities, which are vital to the urban quality of the city and the quality of life of its citizens. The situation is serious in Italy, especially after the failure of public policies for funding of major events (World Cup, 1990; Winter Olympics, 2006). Some recent laws (147/2013) have revived the sector with particular atten-tion to the medium size facilities but have neglected the small structures that represent the basic activities. In case of the latter, a convergence of objectives is needed between public administrations and private investors. Therefore, public au-thorities should think in terms of…

Current challenges and prospective analysis of the Third Sector of Social Action (TSSA) in Spain

2020

This paper analyses the current conditions and future challenges faced by the Third Sector of Social Action (TSSA) in Spain to consolidate itself as an institutional sphere of sustainable welfare and as a strategic actor in the development of social policies. The empirical basis of this work has been obtained with the use of qualitative methods such as in-depth interviews, focus groups and the mixed method of Delphi. The use of these methods is aimed at interpreting TSSA leaders' discourses, the collective voice of Non-governmental organisations (NGO) managers and representatives, and the opinions of experts on: the nature and past development of the sector. This research was carried out un…

Disabled People from Welfare to Jobs: A Decision Support Tool

2012

Despite repeated statements from successive governments in Norway, disabled people employment rate remains unchanged since 2000. A range of studies to describe and analyse the situation qualitatively and quantitatively have been performed, however we have not been able to find any study containing a decision support tool focusing on this issue. This paper presents a simulation model, built using the System Dynamics methodology. The model focuses on enabling disabled people to move from welfare to work, incorporating attitudes of disabled people and employers. The model is designed to cover selected factors that are believed to enable and encourage disabled people to take up jobs. It is inte…

Survey-based qualitative analysis of young generation perception of sustainable development in Poland

2020

Abstract Understanding the perception of Sustainable Development can help to identify misconceptions surrounding the concept in order to design better education plans and public policies on this subject. Evaluating the perception of sustainability issues by focusing on the young generation as is an important proxy to imagine what the future holds for in terms of addressing sustainable development. We conducted 177 in-person interviews on a heterogeneous group of students and random volunteers in four cities in Poland to assess their perception of Sustainable Development. The vast majority (89.3%) of the respondents were familiar with the term ‘Sustainable Development’. However, part of them…

Rethinking Monetary Policy in the Framework of Inclusive and Sustainable Growth

2021

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development places equality and sustainability at the centre of policy agendas. Nowadays, socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable economic growth is a central priority of public policy for most governments worldwide. Based on the theoretical and conceptual frameworks of inclusive growth and sustainable growth, we focus on monetary policy as a powerful macroeconomic policy tool connected with distributional and environmental issues. We deal with how high levels in income and wealth inequality, on the one hand, and shocks related to environmental degradation and climate change, on the other hand, it might have substantial implications for the conduct…
